ABOUT DONNIE

DWS-1-2.jpg

I am a professional Musician/Photographer. I'm not necessarily "new" to photography, but it has definitely become a new priority recently (*2014). In the past, I shot ambient and environmental photography for an entertainment company. When the economy crashed in ‘08, I left there and I left the camera behind as well. What started as a fun hobby for Kerry and me to share, when I wasn’t on the road touring, has turned into a multifaceted business.

I love the fact that this is a career I can share with Kerry, and that we work so well together. The stage always separated us while I was working. Even though prior to Smith Artisan, Kerry had no experience with a camera, she has a natural, amazing ability to frame a subject, and her understanding of lines and curves is unparalleled. Her photos are great, her oil painting and sketches are even better. I should shoot those some time and share them. (*2021 edit: maybe it was being sequestered to the house for 6 months, but Kerry’s photography has improved by leaps and bounds and she was already fantastic). She has become the most sought-after newborn photographer around.

This is probably the "geek" in me, but I love the idea of "capturing light". I find the technique of balancing ambient light with artificial light to create what I see in my head incredibly satisfying.

ABOUT KERRY

"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am a middle school English/Literature teacher.  Teaching is definitely my calling.  I love seeing  that "aha" moment on a child's face when they actually get "it."

I'm also a glorified roadie for Donnie. I'm very supportive of his musical endeavors.  I'd have to say I'm his biggest fan.

I have always tried to capture the beauty in life; however, it has mostly been on canvas or paper with paint, pencil, or chalk.  It wasn't until recently that I started trying to capture that beauty with a camera.  I'm intrigued by photography; having to think about lighting, framing and camera settings that I need instead of simply drawing what I see has been a challenge.  Therefore, I am constantly studying and trying new things (with the help of my analytically-minded husband).

To make a long story short, Donnie and I are embarking on a new adventure.  One that will lead us to new places and introduce us to new people.  We will do our best to capture our adventure in unique ways, so that whoever looks at our photos will know our story and be able to enjoy it with us.
